Stories of the moon fairy, myths of the war in China during the Mongolian rule and tales of the archer who shot down 9 suns from the sky all contour to the reason behind the massive celebration of the Mooncake Festival.
According to the lunar calendar, the Mooncake Festival is celebrated every year on the 15th day of the 8th month, during the mid-autumn season when the moon is at its fullest and brightest. Children play with lanterns that resemble the full moon and enjoy pastries known as Mooncakes. Ancient times, mooncakes were made simply by lard and plain red bean paste, all of which were the only affordable ingredients. Today, mooncakes have adapted to accommodate a diversity of preferences. Mooncakes made by executive Chef Lien at Tung Hing Bakery have over 10 different flavours and are no longer made with lard. It is trans-fat free and has a significantly lower sugar content to comply with cholesterol and calorie sensitive customers.
